OPERATIONS GUIDE

Picking Exceptions: Wrong Item, Damaged Item and Alternative Stock

The goal of a picking exception is not to finish the task at any cost, but to continue without attaching the wrong physical item to the order. Barcode verification remains the core safety rule even during exceptions.

1. When the wrong item is scanned

If the scanned barcode does not match the item in the picking step, the normal flow must not advance. The correct product and target rack must be verified again.

A voice command or manual selection cannot bypass the barcode match.

2. When the item is damaged

A damaged unit must not be treated as normal good stock for the order. In the supported damage flow, a damage reason is selected and the operator continues through the appropriate stock/exception path.

Physically setting the damaged unit aside is not enough; the WMS damage/exception record must also follow the proper workflow.

3. When the item is not on the rack

First use Alternative Rack to look for real usable stock.

If no alternative stock exists, the step can enter STOCK_EXCEPTION; BEWMS does not direct the operator to an empty rack.

4. When alternative stock exists

Picking continues for the same order line at the new target rack. The rack and item barcode are verified again.

Picking from an alternative rack is not a stock transfer; it uses inventory that already exists in that location.

5. When no alternative stock exists

The step waits for Exception / Trouble Station resolution.

The missing unit is not marked as picked and the order is not forced through normal packing before the physical issue is resolved.

6. Short operator checklist

Is the target rack correct?
Does the item barcode match?
Is the physical unit damaged?
Is there verifiable available stock on another rack?
If not, does this step require Exception / Trouble Station resolution?
