OPERATIONS GUIDE

How Alternative Rack Works

Alternative rack is used when the same item has genuinely pickable stock in another physical location. The purpose is not to guess an empty rack, but to move the task to verifiable stock.

1. When to use an alternative rack

If the item is missing from the target rack or that rack cannot be used for the current step, the operator can request alternative stock.

In supported voice-task flows, commands such as “pick this item from another rack” or “alternative rack” can trigger the same operation.

2. What BEWMS searches for

The system does not invent a rack name. The search is based on locations that contain real available physical stock for the item.

When a suitable location is found, the picking step moves to the new target rack while quantity and order-line context remain unchanged.

3. Barcode verification remains active

Moving to another rack does not bypass verification. The target rack and then the item barcode are still verified according to the normal picking rule.

Voice commands cannot bypass barcode safety.

4. When no alternative rack exists

If no real usable alternative stock can be found, BEWMS does not send the operator to an empty location.

The step can remain in STOCK_EXCEPTION and wait for Exception / Trouble Station resolution.

5. Do not confuse this with a stock movement

Alternative rack means picking existing stock from another location. Replenishment means feeding stock from a source area into a pickable target rack.

If stock must be moved into a pickable rack, see Replenishment Advice.
